Breaking the news on a new job!
by lindsayI’m sure a lot of people have gone through the process of telling their boss or employer that they are expecting, but how do you tell them when it’s a new job? Most of you probably don’t know that I am a teacher. I have been teaching kindergarten for the past 4 years and just got a new job where I’ll be teaching 3rd grade. I am moving school districts and haven’t even been in my new classroom yet to get everything prepared so I don’t really know any of my coworkers or my new boss yet. School starts in late August when I’ll be about 5 1/2 months prego. I know I’m not going to be able to hide the pregnancy for too long. When is the right time to tell them? I guess I feel guilty because I am due in December and I’m planning on taking the rest of the school year off. Has anyone else been in a situation like this? I know if it was my old employer I would have no problems telling them. Any teachers out there that would care to share how to deal with this?

As a primary teacher of 10 years with 2 children I would check your contract first. In my district you cannot take more than the 3 months FMLA unless you have been with the district for 3 consecutive years. After you know the contract, then talk with your principal before you arrive for inservice. However if coworkers start asking you of your plans, be vague & tell them you are due in December. If they want more details (as the women in my building are notorious for!) tell them you & your husband are still discussing the FMLA leave possibilities. Good Luck!
